TREATMENT FOR

ANXIETY

Anxiety is our subconscious mind going into protection mode

I know how despairing it is to suffer from anxiety and depression. Feeling like you are in a state of panic, unable to relax and rationalise situations. It is exhausting and damaging. Thankfully hypnotherapy can help you.

Anxiety is the physical danger signal that our nervous system uses to prepare for a critical situation. When a situation or thought triggers our nervous system, it kickstarts a physical ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ reaction. So in a nutshell, anxiety keeps our body and mind safe. Anxiety is our subconscious mind going into protection mode.

Symptoms of anxiety vary from person to person. It could be very mild with butterflies in the stomach to more severe symptoms which include a

racing heart, hot flushes, shaking, chest pains, breathlessness, dizziness, pins and needles, and a sensation of feeling ‘unreal’ in the company of others. Some of these symptoms are completely harmless and are actually part of our genetic instinct for self-preservation.

Generally, we as a society have learned to deal with the symptoms of stress, by breathing exercises or subconsciously manoeuring ourselves into situations or environments where we feel protected from what causes us to be anxious in the first place. However, more and more people who have work-related anxiety are taking more time off sick which can often lead to a long term absence. This has a ripple effect on career prospects.

Social situations can also cause anxiety. For example, speaking in public, an important meeting with a client, a party or a function where we feel we are on show and are expected to ‘perform’. We avoid these situations by cancelling or making excuses in an effort to avoid feeling out of control or trapped.

Personal finances are another very common trigger for anxiety. When we’re experiencing financial hardship – whether it’s of our own making or not – those feelings of helplessness morph into a fear of facing up to the issues. In a vain attempt to alleviate the symptoms – or to avoid having to think about them – we avoid looking at our bank balance or opening bank statements and invent stories to tell ourselves about a new job or a pay rise or a sale on eBay that will make everything all right again.

How does hypnotherapy help anxiety?

Hypnotherapy can help you to overcome the challenges you face. Often, anxiety can be the physical and emotional manifestation of trauma earlier in life. It could be something that consciously you may not have even realised influenced your emotions. Hypnotherapy peels back the subconscious layers to help you find the answers you need. Confronting and dealing with the root cause of the problem effectively allows the
mind to heal itself to a point where you are mentally capable of moving on.

We teach ourselves ways of coping so that we avoid the cause of our anxiety. These coping mechanisms are only a temporary solution and hypnotherapy can help you to explore the emotions that are below the surface and the root cause of our anxiety.

Understanding hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy effectively re-sets your anxiety level to a ‘healthy’ level. It clears your subconscious of the negative or unhealthy thoughts that drive your anxiety state, re- instating calm and relaxation giving you tools to overcome whatever is stopping you from enjoying life to the full.
